Now, I make it no secret that I support you not washing your hair everyday. I'm always talking about it, and don't worry if I haven't talked to you about it yet, I definitely will. Yes! I'm saying that you definitely don't have to wash your hair everyday! Yay! So much more time for activities! (or you know, watching the new episode of Shameless)

Why shouldn't I just wash my hair?
The reason why I so often suggest to wash you hair less often is because by shampooing your hair every day you're stripping the natural oils that your body produces to protect your hair and skin from the environment. And it might sound counter intuitive but it actually helps make it so that you get less oily! What?! Yup! Most people that shampoo often end up being extra oily and it's because you're freaking your body out.
By using harsh soaps and shampoos to strip the oils from our hair and skin it can make our bodies start to over-produce oils to make up for it. This means that when you wash you'r hair less your hair stays softer, smoother, stronger, and even keeps your hair color more vibrant longer. And all without you having to do anything but not wash your hair!

But, why should I use dry shampoo? What does it even do?
What dry shampoo does is it absorbs some of the excess oils on your hair and scalp in a gentle way that doesn't cause your hair and skin to freak out or stress out.
What that means is that you can take away the greasy look in your hair while keeping your style another day or two. It also has the bonus of refreshing your hair so it smells clean and fresh while giving it little extra body.
Dry shampoo is especially helpful when you're first starting to wash your hair less. When you're used to washing your hair everyday it can start to look and feel greasy a lot quicker, not only for the reasons that we discussed above but also because you're just not used to it. So by using some dry shampoo you help take away that extra oil while helping your hair go a little longer between shampoos without freaking out.
With practice you'll find that you can easily stretch the days between shampooing which means you'll have more free time! You'll also be saving on shampoo, conditioner, and styling products!
What?! A hair stylist is telling you to use less of the hair products you got from her meaning that they last longer?! Yup! I don't want just your hair to look great, I also want you to feel good about using the best products for it.
How do I even use a dry shampoo?
Using dry shampoo is so easy it's basically just 3 steps whether you're using a spray or a powder all you do is:
Apply to the roots of your hair right at the scalp - Just make a part in your hair and either spray or sprinkle the dry shampoo right at the scalp. *Pro Tip - if you're working out, apply your dry shampoo before getting your sweat on. It will help keep the extra oils and moisture to a minimum and maximize your efforts.*
Let it sit for a minute or two just to soak up the oils.
Then run either a brush (my favorite is the Shine Enhancer by Wet Brush) or your hands through your hair to disperse excess powder. Then style as usual.
That's it! You're done!
I made a video where you get to get up close and personal with my hair as I use a little dry shampoo to help make my style last a little longer. You can find it here.
Ok, so what makes a good dry shampoo?
The top things that make a good dry shampoo that I'd recommend would be something that doesn't:
Have talc as that may cause issues if inhaled or swallowed.
Weigh your hair down
Over-power your senses with too much perfume (sometimes these can cause headaches for you or those around you
and last but not least
Leave a sticky or gritty feeling in your hair.
There's nothing worse than putting something in your hair that just makes you want to wash it right away.
My favorite dry shampoos
My favorite dry shampoos to recommend and also use myself are Verb's line of dry shampoo. They're all awesome! Lightweight, fresh smelling without being overpowering, powered by cornstarch - not talc - and it doesn't leave that gross, gritty, or sticky feeling that makes you want to wash your hair immediately!
They come in 3 different styles, 2 sprays and 1 powder. The sprays have a small amount of pigment in them to help keep your hair from looking like an old Victorian wig.
The Dark Dry Shampoo has a slightly brown-ish tint to it for darker hair colors.
The Light Dry Shampoo has a lightly violet tone to it to help keep blondes looking brighter while cutting down on brassiness.
Meanwhile, for those that prefer a powder instead of a spray there's the original Dry Shampoo Powder that does everything the sprays do just in a non-tinted white powder form.
Hopefully you feel more confident in your knowledge of why your hair will love you for washing your hair less often and adding a dry shampoo to your routine. Please feel free to let me know if you found this helpful or if you have any more questions about how to keep your hair in tip top shape!
